CHAPTER TWENTY-ONE

As the news quickly spread throughout the communities about this most unusual of ceremonies, elders and other vampires who had been away for centuries, returned to be part of the event. This ceremony was not going to be missed by any vampire at the Elysium and the Temple was so full that it spilled out into the courtyard.

Inside the temple, it had all been specially decorated with small white, pink and blue flowers. Lilac ribbons intertwined around the benches and the pillars and the smell of orange blossoms filled the air, only broken up by the aroma of burning mandrake, lavender and sage incenses on the altar.

The council members were seated together in carved wooden chairs to the right of the altar and Phillippe and Arianne sat nervously on the opposite left side as they waited for Demitri and Angelique to enter from the vestry. Arianne gripped Phillippe’s hand tightly.

“Are you all right?” he asked as he leaned into her. “You look tense. If this is too much for you and if you think it’s moved along too fast, we can stop it.”

“No. I’m not going to lie and not say that I’m not just a little bit nervous about it all. But it’s perfect and I can’t wait. To be totally honest, I just can’t believe it’s really going to happen. This morning, I felt as if I was dreaming all of this.”

A noise in front, made them both jump and they watched as Demitri and Angelique walked through the vestry doors and stepped up behind the altar.

“You’re not dreaming. This is very real,” Phillippe said with a smile as he kissed her hand. “I can’t believe we’re actually going to become parents today. I never thought I’d—we’d—ever...” His voice trailed away into a sigh.

Demitri brought up a box from under the altar. He opened it and took out two old scrolls written on parchment. He straightened them out, placed small weights on either corner to keep them open and looked up at the congregation.

“Our forefathers’ purpose in writing this book was for us to look upon it as the Bible for our kind to revere in its heritage. In it, they placed invocations to make our journey through the centuries more bearable and to mask the bloodlust here at the Elysium. Even with the book gone, the spells that were read generations ago, still carried on and made this place a safe and secure home for us all. But the book also contains the darkness that if unleashed into both ours and the mortal world, would be catastrophic. So, they placed a powerful force on the Book of Cain so that it can only be used by reciting the inscription on these Sakkara scrolls.”

Angelique came forward, looked down at the first scroll and recited the transcribed text. “In the beginning, there was only Cain. Who murdered his brother out of a jealous rage. Cast away to ruins. Cursed forever with immortality. Possessed with the lust for blood. Cain.
